The Statutory Framework of the New Tax Regime (Section 115BAC)

The New Tax Regime represents the default tax regime in India, providing revised slabs and an enhanced standard deduction for salaried taxpayers:

  • Up to ₹3,00,000: Nil (0%).
  • ₹3,00,001 to ₹7,00,000: 5%.
  • ₹7,00,001 to ₹10,00,000: 10%.
  • ₹10,00,001 to ₹12,00,000: 15%.
  • ₹12,00,001 to ₹15,00,000: 20%.
  • Above ₹15,00,000: 30%.
  • Standard Deduction: ₹75,000 for salaried employees.
  • Section 87A Rebate: Up to ₹25,000 rebate, resulting in zero tax if taxable income is ₹7,00,000 or below (or CTC ₹7,75,000 for salaried employees).
  • Health & Education Cess: 4% on total tax.

Worked Example: ₹15 Lakhs CTC in Bengaluru / Mumbai

Consider a software engineer or corporate manager offered a ₹15,00,000 Cost to Company (CTC) package:

  1. CTC Structure Breakdown:

    • Basic Salary (50% of CTC): ₹7,50,000.
    • HRA & Special Allowances: ₹6,60,000.
    • Employer EPF Contribution (12% of basic): ₹90,000.
    • Gross Salaried Earnings: 15,00,000 - 90,000 = ₹14,10,000.
  2. Deductions & Tax Calculation (New Tax Regime):

    • Standard Deduction: ₹75,000.
    • Net Taxable Income: 14,10,000 - 75,000 = ₹13,35,000.
    • Tax on slabs:
      • 0 to ₹3 Lakhs @ 0% = ₹0.
      • ₹3L to ₹7L (₹4 Lakhs) @ 5% = ₹20,000.
      • ₹7L to ₹10L (₹3 Lakhs) @ 10% = ₹30,000.
      • ₹10L to ₹12L (₹2 Lakhs) @ 15% = ₹30,000.
      • ₹12L to ₹13.35L (₹1.35 Lakhs) @ 20% = ₹27,000.
      • Total Tax before cess = ₹1,07,000.
      • 4% Health & Education Cess = ₹4,280.
      • Total Annual Income Tax: ₹1,11,280.
  3. Monthly In-Hand Net Salary:

    • Employee EPF deduction (12% of basic): ₹90,000 / year (₹7,500 / month).
    • Monthly Gross = ₹1,17,500.
    • Monthly Deductions: EPF (₹7,500) + TDS Tax (₹9,273) + Prof Tax (~₹200) = ~₹16,973.
    • Monthly Take-Home In-Hand: ~₹1,00,527.

Accelerating Wealth Creation: The ₹1 Crore SIP Strategy

A ₹1 Lakh monthly in-hand salary enables disciplined wealth building. Putting ₹15,000 per month into an equity mutual fund SIP with an expected 12% CAGR:

  • Total investment over 16 years: ₹28.8 Lakhs.
  • Total estimated corpus accumulated: ₹1.01 Crores (with ₹72.2 Lakhs generated purely by compound growth!).
