Deconstructing the Malaysian Payslip: From Contract Remuneration to Net Salary

When working in Kuala Lumpur, Penang, or Johor Bahru, your contractual monthly salary is subject to statutory payroll deductions enforced by the Inland Revenue Board of Malaysia (Lembaga Hasil Dalam Negeri / LHDN) and social security funds (EPF, SOCSO, and EIS).

1. Mandatory Monthly Payroll Deductions

  1. Employees Provident Fund (EPF / KWSP):
    • Citizens / PRs: 11% employee contribution (allocated into Account 1 Retirement, Account 2 Sejahtera, and Flexible Account 3).
    • Expatriate Workers: 2% reduced statutory contribution.
  2. Social Security Organisation (SOCSO / PERKESO):
    • Covers Employment Injury and Invalidity Scheme: ~0.5% employee share (statutorily capped at the RM 6,000 wage ceiling = RM 29.75 max).
  3. Employment Insurance System (EIS):
    • Retraining and job-loss insurance: 0.2% employee share (capped at RM 6,000 wage ceiling = RM 11.90 max).
  4. Monthly Tax Deduction (PCB / MTD):
    • Progressive tax brackets calculated on annual taxable remuneration (0% to 30%).

2. Verified Numerical Scenario: Monthly Gross Remuneration of RM 8,500 (Citizen, Single)

Consider a Malaysian resident employee earning RM 8,500 monthly gross:

| Payroll Element | Monthly Amount (RM) | Statutory Basis & Cap Rules | |---|---|---| | Contract Gross Salary | 8,500.00 | Agreed monthly remuneration | | EPF / KWSP Employee Deduction (11%) | -935.00 | 11% × RM 8,500 (accumulated in EPF) | | SOCSO / PERKESO Employee Deduction | -29.75 | Statutory cap at RM 6,000 maximum ceiling | | EIS Employee Deduction | -11.90 | Statutory cap at RM 6,000 maximum ceiling | | Total Social Deductions | -976.65 | Social security & retirement savings | | Taxable Income Base for PCB | 7,523.35 | Gross minus statutory EPF relief | | LHDN Monthly Tax Deduction (PCB) | -418.50 | Progressive annual formula calculation | | Total Monthly Deductions | -1,395.15 | Total payroll withholdings (16.4%) | | Net Take-Home Salary in Bank Account | 7,104.85 | Net disposable monthly cash |

Value of Retained Retirement Savings:

While RM 935.00 is deducted for EPF, the employer contributes an additional 12% (RM 1,020.00). The employee gains RM 1,955.00 in total new monthly wealth growing with compounding annual dividends (historically averaging ~5.5% to 6.0%)!

3. Regulatory Sources & Verification

  • LHDN Tax Slabs: Inland Revenue Board of Malaysia (LHDN), Income Tax Act 1967 & Schedule 1 tax brackets. Verified on 21/09/2026.
  • EPF & SOCSO Schedules: Employees Provident Fund Act 1991 and Employees' Social Security Act 1969. Verified on 21/09/2026.
